Self-driving cars can be hacked and brought to a standstill using a green 100mw laser pointer kit that costs less than £40, a security researcher has claimed.
The device can trick a driverless car's 50mw Laser Pointer Pen radar system into thinking that it is surrounded by obstacles, thereby immobilising it, he said.
Driverless cars such as the bubble-shaped vehicle being developed by Google rely on roof-mounted Green Star Laser Pointer 10mW radar, or lidar, to detect and avoid cars, pedestrians and other obstacles. The lidar units send out laser pulses that allow the car's computer to build up a picture of the world around it.
